I gave up on this book awhile ago because I disliked every single character and didn’t care to find out what happened to them. The themes Dostoevsky tackles along the way are significant and weighty.
There is a moment in Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov when the eponymous Tsar asks a Holy Fool to pray for him only to be told “Bugger off you child murdering Tyrant, I can’t pray for you, what kind of fool do you take me for! How do you find the character of Pavel Fyodorovich, aka Smerdyakov, in contrast to Ivan?
The range of personalities, emotions, and reactions of the various characters – all so fully developed and realistic in that specific Dostoyevsky way – makes the plot move along so very quickly. They have set up gods and challenged one another: Thanks for telling us about the problem.
It is hard to read but that doesn’t mean that kind of cruelty is uncommon. It is a painful task to perform but once the tears have washed away the itchiness, a bright light remains which will illuminate the shadowy paths to redemption. Once a upon a time there were three brothers view spoiler [actually there aren’t, but that’s a spoiler hide spoiler ]Dmitri, Ivan and Alexei, who went forth into the world each bearing a legacy from their parents. He personifies an unwanted light that illuminates every dark nook of our minds.
The middle brother Ivan, shows the cold, atheistic, rational learning of the Western world.
